マイルス・デイビスのおすすめ盤には必ず入っているのがこの「BIRTH OF THE COOL」。マイルスは、当時ビ・バップと呼ばれた最先端のパーカーやガレスピーの音楽は、一般の聴衆には斬新すぎると考えました。マイルスいわく、「ビ・バップにはふつうの人が簡単に口ずさめ、誰にでも簡単に見分けられるような要素が、まるでなかった。当時の白人連中は、気軽に聴ける、理解しやすい音楽が好きだった。オレ達は、バードやディズがやったことよりは、ちょっとは優しく、メインストリームに近いところまで持っていったんだ。ただそれだけのことさ」。 確かに、当時ビ・バップすら知らずにこのアルバムを聴いたら斬新さに感動したかもしれません。しかし、我々はこの後に生み出されたマイルスの音楽を知ってしまっています。そのマイルスにしかできない巨大な感動の山を経験してしまった後でこのアルバムを聴くと、どうしても普通に古めのジャズという感じで退屈に聞こえてしまい、マイルスならではの他の追随を許さぬ凄さがないのです。 そのせいか、“おすすめ”にしたがって買ってはみたものの、あまり最後まで気を入れて聴いた覚えはありません。かっこいいタイトル、ちょっとモダンジャズ寄りのビックバンド、ウェスト・コースト・ジャズの走りということで、“マイルス”を意識せずに“何かジャズの雰囲気を”というときのアルバムであって、マイルスを意識したとたんに退屈になってしまいます。 8のBOPLICITYは作曲“Cleo Henry”となっていますが、これはマイルスが当時契約していた出版社とのからみで、母親の名前をもじってつけたもので、本当の作曲者はマイルスとギル・エバンスです。
