ギル・エバンスのアレンジによる美しい旋律、どこまでも深いマイルスの歌声が聴ける「SKETCHES OF SPAIN」。我々聴き手の情念は、彼らの才能と努力によってとめどなく深く、濃く広がります。このアルバムを聴くと、音楽はエンターテインメントでもBGMでもなく、聴き手と制作者たちの情念の一致によって導きだされる体験なのだと思い知らされます。

『スケッチズ・オブ・スペイン』は『ポーギーとベス』と双璧をなすマイルスとギル・エバンスのコンビによるマイルスデイビスミュージックのオーケストレーションです。スペインの作曲家ホアキン・ロドリーゴの「アランフェス協奏曲」を聴いたマイルスが「まいった、たいしたメロディーじゃないか」と思ったことから制作が決まり、早速ギルに意向を伝えました。

スペインの音楽といえばフラメンコです。喜びと悲しみが同時に表現されたような悲哀に富んだその雰囲気は、本作にも受け継がれています。マイルス自身も４曲目のサエタについてこう語っています。「オレがトランペットで女の歌い手の役をした。この曲では喜びにあふれ、また悲しくもなければならなかった。それは本当に難しいことだった」

全体を通して、スペインの伝統的な様式における歌のパートをマイルスがトランペットの即興で表現しています。マイルス自身もここのところが「一番難しかった」と語っています。楽譜に息継ぎの場所まで書き込む完璧主義者ギル・エバンスとともに、これだけの難しいオーケストラの全編に渡って悲喜を込めた即興演奏を繰り広げたマイルスは相当に疲れたようです。

「「スケッチ・オブ・スペイン」をやり終えると、オレには何も残っていなかった。すっかり空っぽになってしまった。完璧に、何もかもだ。感情のすべてを吐き出して、難しい演奏を全部やり終えた後は、もう聴き返したくもなかった。」と語っています。

ジャズの即興というと、気の合うメンバーと（時にはアルコールも入った）ノリでやってしまうというイメージがありますが、マイルスはそういう世界とはもっとも遠いところにいます。本作はそれを強烈に感じさせます。最も有名なのは１曲目の「アランフェス協奏曲」でしょう。16分を超える大作であり、あまりに完成された名曲です。もしマイルスでない人間が吹いたとしても名曲足り得るのではないかと思う程です。しかしながらマイルスが吹くことによってより贅沢極まりないものとなっています。２曲目以降は、ギル・エバンスの曲も多く、マイルスとギルがより感じやすくなっています。アランフェスがとても有名かつ長い曲ですが、全曲聴くことをおすすめします。
