マイルス・デイビス〜究極のオリジナリティに触れる
マイルス・デューイ・デイビス３世（Miles Dewey Davis III、1926年５月26日ー1991年９月28日）は、「ジャズ界を牽引してきたトランぺッター」といわれます。そういう部分があることは間違いありませんが、マイルスはもっと特別で巨大な存在です。
父のジャズ好きの影響で母のお腹の中にいるときからジャズを聴かされ、以来40年。ジャズを中心にロック、ポップス、クラシック、テクノなど様々な音楽を聴いてきたいま、マイルスの音楽はますます孤高の輝きを放っています。
マイルスを聴こうと思う時の気分はあくまで“マイルスが聴きたい”であって、“ジャズが聴きたい”とは異なります。マイルスでなくてはダメなのです。世の中にオリジナリティなるものがあるならば、マイルスの音楽こそ究極といえるでしょう。
40年代から90年代までの半世紀を駆け抜けたマイルスの音楽は、ひとくちでジャズとは呼べない広大な版図を持っています。レコード販売の分類的にいうならば、ジャズ、フュージョン、ファンク、ロック、ラップ、オーケストラ、映画音楽などといった具合です。
しかし、そのどれもがマイルス・デイビスしています。ストレートにガツンときます、感情が揺さぶられます、かっこいい！と唸れます。マイルスの言葉をかりれば“ヒップ”です。
マイルスに目覚め、制度の呪縛を解き放て
実は、産まれる前からジャズを聴かされていたこと、いわゆるジャズファンからの影響により“ジャズ”というカテゴライズに視界を曇らされ、最初はマイルスのそのストレートで強烈なガツンがわかりませんでした。何かというと“ジャズ”とくくって表現＆制度化し、その中に押し込めようとするレコード業界、マスコミ、評論家を恨みます。初めてマイルスに（音楽に）開眼した時、それまで“ジャズに電子楽器はいらない”などとジャズ通を気取っていた自分にとてつもなく後悔しました。
それは、大学生をしていた20歳の頃、50年代のいわゆるジャズばかり聴いていましたが、ある時、ふと60年代のマイルスのアルバムを買ってみたのです。確か『マイルス・スマイルズ』（1966）だったと記憶しています。
60年代の黄金のクインテットと呼ばれる、マイルス・デイビス（tp）、ウエイン・ショーター（ts）、ハービー・ハンコック（p）、ロン・カーター（b）、トニー・ウイリアムス（ds）というメンバーでした。
“ん、何か違うぞ、何だ、この感触は？、おっ！、え、あ、凄い！ かっこいい！”となったわけです。
マイルス開眼のガツンを味わったら、もうあとは視界もすっきり、エレクトリックマイルスなどといわれる『ビッチーズ・ブリュー』（1969）、元祖フュージョンなどといわれる『イン・ア・サイレント・ウェイ』(1969）、ロックの殿堂フィルモアイーストに乗り込んだ『マイルス・アット・フィルモア』（1970）と感動の渦に巻き込まれ、ますますマイルスが（音楽が）やめられなくなります。
極めつけは『ゲット・アップ・ウィズ・イット』（1970）。全ての色眼鏡は吹き飛ばされ、マイルスが（音楽が）洪水のように襲ってきます。
ジャズがますます魅力的になる
不思議なことに、一度開眼してしまうと、40年代、50年代のアルバムの魅力も増していきます。ジャズ史上最高のかっこよさを誇るレーベル、ブルーノートの『マイルス・デイビス Vol 1 & 2』（1952）のよさも、それまでの“ジャズしてていい”“栄光の1500番台のトップバッター”的なものから、より感情直撃の感動にかわり、ジャズの代表作『カインド・オブ・ブルー』（1959）など息が止まりそうになり、さらには、他のジャズミュージシャンの音楽もまた魅力と輝きを増していきました（特にマイルスと演奏している時）。
本当のオリジナリティに触れるということは、やはり素晴らしい体験だとマイルスに学んだといえます。
やっぱりレコードなの？
そんなことはありません。「レコードでなくては集めた気がしない」などというのも一つの趣味ですが、マイルスを聴く一番の楽しみは、マイルスのオリジナリティに触れて感動することです。国内盤でも輸入盤でも手に入れやすいCDでよいのです（ジャケットデザインは輸入盤の方がかっこいい場合が多い）。
レコードを上等のオーディオで回す、もしくはレコードから圧縮なしでデータ化し、同じく上等のオーディオで聴けば最高の音質であることに間違いはありませんが、時間とお金、手間がかかってなかなかやっていられません。最近のCDの音質はメジャーレーベルのものであれば高音質になっていますから十二分といえます。その上、アマゾンなどから輸入CDが送料込みで900円程度と驚く程安価に購入できます。さらには、コロンビアの全アルバム約50タイトル＋DVDがセットで26,000円程などという驚くような価格のセットものもあります。良い時代です（これから買う人が羨ましい）。
ただし、複数のCDを１枚にするなどオリジナルの構成を変えているものは基本的に避けましょう。マイルスや、名プロデューサー、テオ・マセロのコンセプトが崩れてしまい、肝心の感動が得られません。それから、できればボーナルトラックもやめてもらいたいものですが、「マイルスを買ってみようかな」と思ったときにボーナス・トラック入りのCDしかなければ、買う気分を優先させるべきです。思い立ったが吉日です。一刻も早く聴きましょう。
